Why Take a Cab at Miami Airport
After a long flight, a taxi is the simplest way to reach your hotel from Miami International Airport (MIA). Official cabs wait at marked ranks outside the terminals around the clock. Most are the familiar yellow cars run by licensed companies, though a smaller number of authorized black cabs also work the airport.
The main appeal is that you arrange nothing in advance. The moment you leave baggage claim, a line of cars stands ready to go. You also get true door-to-door service, with no bus routes to decode and no suitcases to drag between train platforms.
Comfort and security count too. Your bags ride locked in the trunk, which is safer than juggling them on a crowded bus, and you can sit back while the driver heads straight to your accommodation. Cabs are not the cheapest route into the city, but most travelers find the convenience worth the fare.
Taxi Fares and Prices at MIA
Every official car runs on a meter. Flat rates no longer apply, so each ride is billed by distance and time at government-regulated tariffs.
The current fare structure looks like this (rates set by Miami-Dade County):
* First 1/6 mile (0.26 km): $2.95 / €2.76
* Each additional 1/6 mile up to 1 mile (1.6 km): $0.85 / €0.80
* Each additional 1/6 mile beyond the first mile: $0.55 / €0.51
* Waiting time: $0.40 / €0.37 per minute ($24 / €22.46 per hour)
* Airport surcharge: $2 / €1.87
* Tolls: added to the final fare
Wheelchairs, child seats, pets, and luggage travel free of charge.
As a rough guide, a 20-minute trip to downtown costs about $27 / €25.29. A $15 / €14 minimum applies to every airport ride, even very short ones.
You can pay in cash or by credit and debit card. Every cab is required to carry a card terminal, but it is still wise to confirm the driver accepts cards before you set off.
Our Tip: a driver may occasionally suggest a flat price, yet officially every fare from the airport must run on the meter.
Fares to Popular Destinations
Approximate costs from MIA to the places travelers head most often:
Downtown Miami: $27 / €25.29, about 20 min
Cruise Port: $30 / €28, about 15 min
South Beach: $40 / €37, about 25 min

Where Is the Taxi Rank?
Ranks sit on the Arrivals level (ground floor), just outside the terminal. Once you have collected your bags and stepped past the baggage hall, the stand is directly ahead of the terminal doors.
Getting to Your Hotel
When convenience and safety come first, a cab to your hotel is hard to beat. Service runs day and night, with direct drop-offs anywhere in the city no matter when you land.
On a tighter budget, it is worth asking whether your hotel runs a complimentary shuttle, which can trim your transport costs.
Tips & Hints
* Check that the meter is reset and running once you climb in.
* Ignore ride offers from people approaching you inside or outside the building; use only the marked ranks.
* Licensed cars show a "Taxi" or "Cab" sign, the company phone number, and the driver's permit inside the vehicle.
* Heavy traffic can push up both the travel time and the final fare.
* At peak hours you may queue briefly for a free car.
* Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available on request.
* Drivers must take you to your chosen address, though some are reluctant on very short hops.
* Tipping is optional but customary; 15–20% is normal for good service.
* Not every driver speaks fluent English, but most handle both English and Spanish.
* Ride-hailing apps also operate at the airport.
