Quick answer: Hard Rock Stadium is in Miami Gardens, about 16 to 19 miles by road north of Miami International Airport (MIA), and there is no train or bus that runs straight from the terminal to the gates. From the airport you have three workable plans: a taxi or ride-hail to the stadium drop-off, a ride to one of the stadium's free GEICO HRS Express shuttle lots, or Metrorail downtown and then Brightline to Aventura, which has free stadium shuttles for Dolphins games and select concerts. Whichever you choose, leave the suitcase behind: the stadium only lets in clear bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches.
The stadium is the home of the Miami Dolphins and University of Miami football, and it also hosts the Orange Bowl, the Miami Open tennis tournament, the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix on a circuit built around it, and big stadium concerts. The transport rules below are the ones the stadium publishes for football games and general events; for the tennis and the Grand Prix, the organisers publish their own plans, so check those pages for the week you travel.
The routes at a glance
| Route from MIA | What you pay | Where it leaves you | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi, direct | Meter, roughly $60 to $70 before tip and traffic time | Taxi drop-off on NW 199th Street | Groups of three or four, the least walking |
| Uber or Lyft, direct | App price, surges around the event | Lot 44 at Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, about a 30-minute walk | Off-peak arrivals |
| Ride to Lot 95, then GEICO HRS Express | Your ride to Golden Glades; the shuttle itself is free | North-west corner of the stadium | The trip back south towards the airport |
| Metrorail, Brightline, stadium shuttle | $2.25 Metrorail plus a Brightline ticket to Aventura | NW 199th Street near the Gate 3 pedestrian bridge | Dolphins games and select concerts only |
Taxi straight from the airport
Miami taxis run on the meter from MIA, with no flat zone fares. The airport's published tariff starts at $2.95 for the first sixth of a mile, then $0.85 for each further sixth up to the first mile and $0.55 for each sixth after that, plus a $2 airport fee. On the two usual road routes, 16 to 19 miles via the Palmetto Expressway and NW 27th Avenue or via NW 37th Avenue, that adds up to roughly $60 to $70 before the tip and before any time spent crawling in traffic. Without traffic the drive takes 30 to 40 minutes, and on an event day it can take much longer as you get close to the stadium.
Taxis pick up at the marked zones outside arrivals; our taxi guide shows where the ranks are and how the meter works. At the stadium, taxis drop off along NW 199th Street. After the event, the stadium says taxis wait on the same street on a first-come, first-served basis, and the fare back is set by the taxi company, not by the stadium.
Uber or Lyft: the drop-off is not at the gate
Ride-hail looks like the simple option, but the stadium moves rideshare cars away from the building. Its rideshare page puts the drop-off and pick-up zone in Lot 44 at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, 3000 NW 199th Street, and describes it as an off-site lot about a 30-minute walk from the stadium entrance. The same page warns about surge pricing and long waits when everyone calls a car at once after the final whistle.
If you are heading back towards the airport after the event, the stadium's own advice is better: ride the free stadium shuttle to Lot 95 at the Golden Glades Parking Garage and call your car from there, away from the stadium traffic. For a price comparison between the two, see our taxi vs Uber guide.
The free GEICO HRS Express shuttles
The GEICO HRS Express is the stadium's own park-and-ride. Climate-controlled buses run between two outlying lots and the north-west corner of the stadium, using a dedicated express lane to the Florida Turnpike. Riding it is free, and you do not need to park a car to board. If you do drive, parking at either lot costs $10 per vehicle.
- Lot 95, Golden Glades Parking Garage, 16000 NW 7th Avenue, Miami. This is the lot on the airport side: the stadium tells fans travelling south after the game to use it.
- Lot 70, across the street from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel, 5700 S State Road 7, Fort Lauderdale. This one is for fans heading north.
For Dolphins games, both lots open three hours before kick-off, and the shuttles start then or shortly after: the stadium's pages give both times. They keep running until 75 minutes after the game. For concerts and other events, the stadium lists only Lot 70, with shuttles from 30 minutes before the gates open until one hour after the event. When you leave, separate lines load for Lot 70 and Lot 95, so check the sign before you board.
Train: Metrorail, then Brightline to Aventura
Rail gets you close, but not all the way. The first leg is Metrorail: the Orange Line leaves from the MIA station, which the free MIA Mover links to the terminal, and runs downtown for $2.25. Brightline's MiamiCentral station is next to the Government Center and Historic Overtown/Lyric Theatre Metrorail stops. From MiamiCentral, Brightline runs north to its Aventura station, 6.7 miles from the stadium. Our Miami airport train guide covers the Metrorail part.
The last leg is the part to check. Brightline offers free round-trip shuttles between Aventura and the stadium only on marked trains: END ZONE EXPRESS trains for Miami Dolphins home games and Hard Rock Stadium Connect trains for select concerts. You pick those trains by the icon when you book. The shuttles leave Aventura 10 minutes after each marked train arrives, and the return shuttle leaves the stadium one hour before your train back. Pick-up and drop-off is on NW 199th Street near the Gate 3 pedestrian bridge. Brightline says you need a train ticket or a parking pass to board. The stadium says there is no free Brightline shuttle during the Miami Open.
This route suits you if you are already staying downtown or in Brickell. Straight off a flight, with bags and a meal still to sort out, it means three vehicles and two changes.
Driving and stadium parking
You can rent a car at MIA and drive, but plan the parking before you set off. For Dolphins games, the stadium says parking on site is prepaid only, and the only lots you can still buy on the day are Lot 70 and Lot 95 with the HRS Express shuttle. The inner and outer stadium lots open four hours before kick-off. For other events, check the event page, because the rules and prices change from event to event.
Drivers with a valid disabled parking placard can use accessible spaces, and for Dolphins games an inner-lot accessible space needs a pre-purchased "ADA Reserved" pass. The stadium also runs assistance shuttles on request from the accessible spaces in Lots 13, 18 and 40.
Bags: leave the suitcase at the airport
This is the rule that catches travellers coming straight from a flight. The stadium's clear bag policy allows one clear plastic bag no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, plus a small bag or fanny pack up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Bigger bags and non-clear bags over that size are not allowed in. There is a paid bag check near Gates 3, 5, 8 and 14, card only, from $12 to $20 depending on the size, and it closes 60 minutes after the gates close. It is meant for bags that are slightly too big, not for a trip's worth of luggage.
The easier answer is the airport's own staffed checkroom. It is run by Communitel on Level 2 of Central Terminal E, before security, from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., at $12 to $24 per bag per day depending on size. The details are in our luggage storage guide. Mind the closing time: if the event ends late and you fly out that night, collect your bags before you head to the stadium.
Timing tips for event days
- Leave more time than the map app suggests. The last few miles to the stadium are where the event traffic builds, and the stadium changes lot access and walking routes when there is construction work.
- Buy parking or train seats before the day. On football Sundays, stadium parking sells out, and the Brightline shuttle only works with the marked trains.
- For the way back, pick your exit before the game: the HRS Express line for your lot, the taxi queue, or the Lot 44 rideshare zone.
- Check the event itself. The Miami Open is set for 14 to 28 March 2027, subject to change, and the Formula 1 organisers announce the Grand Prix date on their own site.
